I was wondering if anyone knew that at one time in his life C.S. Lewis was an atheist? It's quite interesting, that one of the most Christian writers I know about did not believe in God at one time in his life. I think he turned atheist after his mother died, but I could be wrong. Does anyone know what turned him back to Christianity?

Yes, I actually did know that. Quite interesting, to be sure. I heard that it was the influence of Tolkien himself that turned Lewis to Christianity!

Yes, he was influenced by arguments and discussions with Tolkien and G.K. Chesterton's book, The Everlasting Man. He said he was "the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England" and "came into Christianity kicking and screaming."
Much to Tolkien's regret he joined the Church of England but even so, many of his beliefs were influenced by Catholic doctine. Truthfully, I don't think he really fit in with any denomination.
But regardless of differences he is generally accepted by all. I guess that is not a surprise. Few have equaled him depth of thought and wisdom.

I know Tolkien said "Lewis would regress. He would not re-enter Christianity by a new door, but by the old one: at least in the sense that in taking it up again he would also take up again, or reawaken, the prejudices so sedulously planted in childhood and boyhood. He would became again a Northern Ireland protestant."
Lewis became a Christian again in 1931 (according to something I wrote for an English assignment years ago), having abandoned his faith as a teenager...

Hmmm...that's really interesting. I had no idea that he was an atheist. "Kicking and screaming." Ha ha ha. That's awesome.
